Medical Imaging Portfolio
Our lens portfolio covers production lenses in M7, M8, M10, M12, M14, and M16 mounts, with focal lengths from under 1 mm (miniature fisheye) to about 20 mm (narrow field of view), and filter options that include IR-cut, no-IR, dual-band day/night, and NIR bandpass versions. Sample quantities can be ordered online, so a feasibility camera can be imaging within days rather than months.
We design and manufacture high-resolution imaging solutions according to customer requirements for a wide range of medical devices, including disposable (single-use) endoscopes, point-of-care diagnostic devices, and veterinary cameras. These lenses are designed with bio-compatible materials and are assembled in a dedicated medical device cleanroom environment.
Examples of our past successes are:
- A Disposable Laparoscope with 26 lens elements including both glass and plastic elements.
- A Single-Use Colonoscope objective lens with a hybrid structure maximizing the advantages of each material technology.
- A high-quality dual-channel objective lens assembly for Stereo Vision Robotic Surgery.
- A high-quality aspherical Dental Scope objective.
- Multiple Portable, point-of-care Diagnostic Devices

Key Technologies
Narow to Large FOVs
We are leveraging best-in-class design expertise and are constantly driving process improvements and manufacturing innovation for our global customer base to push the boundaries of what is possible.
Our optical and mechanical engineering teams apply their proven engineering know-how to create new products and novel solutions to support your project goals. From Design To Cost (DTC), Design for Manufacturing (DFM), and Design for Reliability (DFR), we always have the full product development cycle and your specific business case in mind.
FOVEA and Tailored Distortion Control
Expanding beyond our Optical Design Services, we can create an even further vertically integrated solution for you. From optomechanical design, PCB design, and auxiliary component integration to manufacturing tolerancing, End-of-Line (EOL) test requirements, and Quality Control (QC) procedures, we can design your camera module and prepare your optical system for prototyping and ramp into manufacturing.
Finite Imaging with Large Depth of Field
Sunex’s renowned excellence in Optical Design is complemented by its extensive experience and leading position in the manufacturing of optical systems. If your solution benefits from early prototyping and samples to optimize performance, explore mechanical variants, or solicit early end-user input, we would be honored to be your partner of choice.
Our state-of-the-art prototyping equipment and accredited in-house test facilities support in-depth prototype evaluation before transitioning further on the path to mass production.
Supporting Services
Camera Module Capabilities
We work with our customers and partner network to find the best balance between cost and performance to meet the often unique application requirements. Sunex offers a wide range of services, including designing and manufacturing the lens and the optomechanical components, the PCBA, and the right cabling solution. Sunex has the expertise and capabilities for high-volume manufacturing in state-of-the-art
cleanroom facilities, automated 6-axis active alignment, and the test and quality control processes required to support the most demanding medical imaging applications.
Fast Prototyping
In specific cases, prototyping is used as the first stepping stone toward mass production. Besides the lens performance, exploring various mechanical design solutions is often part of these early efforts. Staying within the required dimensions while accommodating additional working channels and features is crucial for a successful product.
Sunex can produce prototypes with short lead times to verify the design before transitioning further on the path to mass production using state-of-the-art fabrication processes for glass and plastic optical elements and all mechanical components.
Designed for Mass Production
Often it is not the challenge to create a design “that works” but to find a solution that can scale to mass production, meeting price targets, optical performance, mechanical constraints, and quality requirements. Sunex has over two decades of design and manufacturing experience, and all our lenses and modules are designed for high-volume manufacturability.
Reliability and Environmental Testing
Often, it is not the challenge to create a design “that works” but to find a solution that can scale to mass production (DFM), meets required price targets (DTC), and delivers on performance and quality (DFR). Our deep design and manufacturing experience comes from servicing some of the most demanding markets and applications, and combined with consistent quality and global on-time delivery, Sunex is the preferred partner for many.

Medical Applications
Six medical imaging applications, one practical starting point: how Sunex’s off-the-shelf lens portfolio, 30+ years of custom optical design, and active-aligned camera modules support diagnostics, endoscopy, surgical, veterinary, life sciences, and contract manufacturing programs.

Custom Optics vs. Chip-level Camera Modules
Custom Optics for Medical Devices offer a Flexible Alternative to Chip-level Cameras for single-use endoscopes.

5 Questions to Ask Every Lens Supplier Before You Commit
Choosing a lens supplier is one of the highest-leverage decisions in any imaging program. These five diagnostic questions cut through the pitch deck and expose whether a potential partner can actually deliver — from prototype to production.

The Cost of Making the Wrong Lens Choice
When procurement teams evaluate optical components, unit price is the number that fits most naturally into a spreadsheet. However, unit price is only a fraction of what a wrong choice can cost over the program lifetime.

Medical Solutions
Deep optical design experience and advanced process and manufacturing know-how will drive single-use as the future of endoscopy.

What Is Active Alignment — And When Does Your Program Actually Need It?
Active alignment (AA) is the assembly process that dynamically positions a lens relative to a powered image sensor to compensate for mechanical tolerances, tilt, and boresight error — delivering consistent MTF performance at scale for high-resolution embedded vision systems.

Medical Camera Modules
Our expertise address these need for advanced medical camera modules, designed specifically for demanding medical applications.

Hydrophobic and Oleophobic Coatings
Applications in Imaging Optics Oleophobic refers to the physical property of a molecule that repels oil.
